Explored free-hand gesture interaction techniques and the design of menus for augmented, virtual, and mixed-reality applications. Reviewed existing gesture taxonomies and “point design” studies. Investigated the use of visual displays and natural user interfaces in the design of architectural spaces in a mixed-reality environment. Developed a protocol for a prospective research study. Provided Engineering Economy instructional assistance through teaching aid, exam preparation, class lecturing, and grading.

Assessed, conceptualized, and forecasted current advancements in brain-computer interfacing, mesorobotic, and urban decoy application domains. Located underlying system level components and SMEs by means of author disambiguation, visualization, and co-authorship network analysis. Evaluated and redesigned the user interface and interaction model for a technology sequence analysis engine.  Developed task and user flows, developed the information architecture, designed screens, and performed

heuristic analyses.

User Experience / Human-Centered Design Intern

Summer 2015

 

(Primary focus on the review and design of vehicle infotainment systems.)  Developed numerous wireframes and flow diagrams for different system applications (ex. home, phone, audio, navigation).  Built a medium fidelity touch-enabled multi-screen prototype in Axure RP Pro.  Conducted formative research through usability testing of the prototypes.  Composed questions and dialogue for discussion guides to be used in testing, of which I also was a lead note taker and secondary discussant.  Participated in weekly brainstorming sessions; collaborating directly with clients, visual designers, and a programmer.

Investigated the application of emerging visual display technologies for the design of head-mounted and touch-enabled display interfaces. Conducted card sorting activities, evaluated storyboards, designed low and medium-fidelity paper prototypes, and performed iterative “Wizard of Oz” prototyping.

Cognitive Engineering for Novel Technologies Lab

(Investigated color-blending in augmented reality (AR) with Google Glass).  Measured the combined color of real-world backgrounds and virtual colors as projected through the Google Glass display through the use of an optical AR testbed that emulates outdoor lighting conditions.

Individual Research
Designed an electronic flight bag (EFB) user interface for the Traffic and Atmospheric Information for General Aviation (TAIGA) system to improve the situation awareness and enhance the mental model of pilots flying in Alaska airspace.  Reviewed background and current uses of EFBs, investigated initial requirements and goals for the application, and assessed both the use cases, and needs and expectations of users for each previously proposed flight scenario.  Provided mode/button nomenclature and descriptions, drafted a technical paper, prepared a poster, and presented research.  Assisted the Flight Deck Display Research Laboratory (FDDRL) with the single pilot operations study.


Group Research (Singular Tasks)
(Investigated the feasibility of incorporating an aerial mass transit system in the San Francisco (SF) Bay Area using a fleet of electronically powered quadcopters to supplement current commuter services).  Led the theoretical component of the study.  Collaborated with several NASA personnel and contractors to aid in an investigation of the regulations and logistics related to unmanned aerial vehicles in the SF Bay Area airspace.  Developed flight path simulations and designed the quadcopter interior vehicle architecture and vertiport concepts.  Drafted a segment of the technical paper, research poster, and NASA Headquarters project video, and presented research.

Investigated factors that influence time delays in maneuvers performed by pilots of commercial aircraft).  Explored how human information processing, situation awareness, and the mental model are associated with pilots.  Drafted a technical paper, prepared a poster, and presented research.

Designed a home interface for a theoretical decision support system that operates within an Incident Command Center for disaster management.  Replaced working memory demands with perceptual ones through use of salient colors, supporting shapes, and pictorial images.

2013 Walt Disney Imagineering Imaginations Design Competition

November 2012

 

Led a small team to imagine and design a recreational experience for the citizens and tourists of downtown Chicago.  Composed a compelling story, designed preliminary concepts of the structures and various exhibits, and conceived and designed two animated characters for which the experience centered around.
